About 500 Shan refugees on the Thai border fear they may be involuntarily repatriated to an active war zone strewn with land mines, according to a network of Shan community-based organizations. The Koung Jor camp in Wiang Haeng district, northern Chiang Mai province, was visited by Burmese police last month who asked the refugees if they had a desire to return to Burma. The Shan network said that though none of the refugees indicated a desire to be repatriated, plans are moving ahead to build housing in Mong Taw, about 15 kilometers from the border in Burma.
