KUALA LUMPUR (Oct 5, 2011): The legalisation component of the comprehensive 6P programme to resolve the issue of illegal immigrants is to be implemented on Monday, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said today.
This will see the 2.3 million registered illegal immigrants emplaced in jobs in the five major sectors designated by the government, namely plantation, construction, manufacturing, farming and services, he said.
The 6P programme comprises the six components of registration, legalisation, amnesty, monitoring, enforcement and deportation.
"Those who have registered will be emplaced where they should be in all the
designated sectors.
"They may be emplaced where they now work. If it is deemed suitable, they will carry on working there and will be given work permits," he told reporters after chairing a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Foreign Workers and Illegal Immigrants at Parliament House, here. Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein and Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam were also present at the press conference.
Muhyiddin said that of the 2.3 million immigrants, 1.01 million were registered under the biometric system and the remaining 1.3 million under the amnesty component of the 6P programme.
He also said that 50,000 of the registered immigrants were employed in unapproved sectors and were thus illegal workers.
"We want to give a chance to those who came forward to register to be employed in the sectors we have approved," he said.
Muhyiddin said that after the completion of the legalisation process, stern action would be taken against the employers who failed to register their workers and get them emplaced in the government-approved sectors.
"We have given them adequate time and more extensions than necessary. Enforcement will be carried out against those who did not respond to our offer to register during the specified period.
"The important thing is to take stern action against the employers and subsequently against the illegal immigrants," he said.
Muhyiddin said the enforcement would be undertaken immediately if there were reports of employers harbouring illegal immigrants.
He also said that the freeze on recruitment of foreign workers would remain in force until after the legalisation process. – Bernama
