BANGKOK, Sept 6 (Bernama) -- Myanmar's Ethnic Nationalities Council (ENC) President Khin Aung Myint has called for a boundary demarcation between Thailand and Myanmar to strengthen border security and boost development.
Khin said Myanmar is also seeking cooperation with Thailand on the "Two Countries, One Destination" tourism campaign aimed at promoting connectivity between people of both countries, Thai News Agency (TNA) reported.
Khin was speaking during a courtesy call on Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra at the Government House on Wednesday.
Government spokesman Teerat Rattansevi told reporters after the meeting that Yingluck had agreed to demarcation of the land border between both countries, emphasising it would help reduce trade obstacles and expand private sector investment.
The Thai premier also expressed her full support for the "Two Countries, One Destination" campaign, saying it would enhance relations between Thailand and Myanmar and among other members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) block.
The spokesman said Khin also noted at the meeting that the Myanmar Government does not recognise the Rohingya minority group as its citizens, and that "the Myanmar authorities did not force them out of the country and the refugees may have come from Bangladesh."
Yinfluck on her part said Thailand has provided assistance to the Rohingya refugees in accordance with international standards, and would not allow any minority group to use Thailand as their base against the Myanmar government.
At the meeting, the Thai premier also acknowledged her support for the 27th South East Asian Games (SEA Games) set in Myanmar in December, and Myanmar's preparations for the Asean chairmanship in 2014.
