Press Statement 16 December 2012 : New Home, New Life for Refugees
World Refugee Day will be commemorated on 20 June 2012 with the theme ‘New Home, New Life for Refugees’. To remember the day and improve engagement between refugee communities and Malaysian public, Amnesty International Malaysia together with NGOs will be organising a Refugee Carnival on 16 June 2012, 10am-3pm, at Dewan Dominic, Jalan Robertson, Off Jalan Pudu, KL.
The latest statistics from UNHCR states that there are 216,900 refugees in Malaysia. However despite repeated appeals from Malaysian NGOs and world communities, and that Malaysia is a member of UN Human Rights Council, we are yet to sign the 1951 Refugee Convention and offer protection or recognition to refugees.
Most refugees are unable to return to their country of origin due to a fear of being persecuted for their race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership of a particular social group. They are vulnerable, fearful of the future and need assistance. The current world economic and political situation has ensures that there will be no ending to the refugee situation. Malaysia and Malaysians are in the position to assist and take the lead in this region to stop further persecution.
For a start we could offer our hand in friendship and get to know them better. Refugees are of diverse groups, have different life experiences and expertise, and are looking for a place called home. Come and get to know them by attending our Refugee Carnival and be mesmerized by their handicraft and food. A Home is where the Heart is so lets us share their journey in looking for a Home. See you there!
