Islamic Relief Malaysia (IRM), a non-governmental organisation NGO is
planning to set up a school in the country specially for children of
Rohingya refugees.
The move is necessary to enable these displaced people receive proper education.
Millions of Rohingya refugees have fled to neighbouring countries following a crackdown by the Myanmar government.
In Malaysia alone, some 30,000 Rohingya refugees are taking refuge
under the auspices of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees
(UNHCR).
"Setting up it would have to be where it should be central and where
the cost is the cheapest. Because when you run anything free you have to
be very careful, to monetary aspect of it and the volunteers who comes
in impart their knowledge," said Azura Ibrahim, IRM Regional Leader.
In conjunction with the Ramadan month, some of the NGOs including
Islamic Relief Malaysia and Malaysian Hot 40s distributed aid to 50
Rohinya families.
Each family received boxes of food supplies, clothings and RM150 in cash.
Most of the Rohingya refugees who have started to settle in Malaysia
since 20 years ago, were grateful for being able to remain in the
country.
"They would pick a fight saying that we don't belong in the country.
This is our country. There is no place for Muslims. We cannot do
anything, Azan or call to prayers is not allowed, praying is prohibited
and has to be done in secrecy Thanks God, Malaysians are nice people and
so is the King. I'm going to stay here till I die. I don't want to go
back," said Hazrah Mohd. Amin, Rohingya Refugee.
