UNHCR's Refugee Welfare Fund
UNHCR/C.Ferstad
Nearly 100,000 refugee men, women and children struggle each day to survive in Malaysia.
There is an absence of a legal framework in managing the refugee issue in Malaysia,
and this creates great unpredictability in refugees’ lives. There are no refugee
camps, and therefore refugees live in towns and cities across Malaysia, and find
their own ways of coping and making a living.
HOW YOU CAN HELP: UNHCR REFUGEE WELFARE FUND
While refugees work and support each other in order to survive in Malaysia, the
fact that they are unable work legally and unable to earn regular income means that
for most of them, making ends meet remains a daily struggle.
It is not an easy environment for refugees, but there are many opportunities for
Malaysian individuals and corporations to help refugees in Malaysia as they strive
to rebuild their lives in safety and dignity.
Every month, UNHCR receives over 350 new applications from refugees for financial,
health and other welfare assistance, translating to over 4,200 requests every year.
With our very limited budget, only a fraction of these requests can be met.
HOW YOU CAN HELP: UNHCR REFUGEE WELFARE FUND
The Refugee Welfare Fund prioritises refugees with health emergencies in Malaysia.
The Fund is managed by UNHCR's NGO partner, the Buddhist Tzu Chi to provide life-saving
medical assistance to those in greatest need. Each donation goes directly to the
Refugee Welfare Fund to help the most vulnerable individuals under our protection.
A donation can be made by cheque, addressed to "Taiwan Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation
Malaysia”, with the words “Refugee Welfare Fund” written at the
back. This can be mailed to UNHCR at:
