One Myanmar migrant worker has been killed and two injured in separate attacks by one or more gangs of Malaysian youths in the northern suburbs of the capital, Kuala Lumpur, over the last week.
Speaking on Myanmar state TV on Sunday, Myanmar Ambassador to Malaysia Tin Latt said, “On the morning of May 30, a Myanmar worker who works at a vegetable shop in Selayang Market was on his way back home when he was attacked by a gang of unidentified motorcyclists. He was taken to the Selayang Hospital.
“At about 10 pm on the night of May 31, another Myanmar worker was attacked in similar fashion. And on the same day, a Myanmar national living in western Selayang was killed by a gang.”
Fearing further attacks, about 30 Myanmar workers have taken refuge at a Myanmar Buddhist monastery in Kuala Lumpur hosted by senior monk Ashin Sandika.
The Ambassador said that the embassy has contacted all Myanmar consuls, the police and relevant organizations in Malaysia.
There are more than 400,000 Myanmar migrant workers in Malaysia, according to Tin Latt. About 300,000 are legal workers, he said, while about 40,000 are illegal and about 90,000 are in various processes of refugee status, he said.
