Three held, fake documents syndicate busted

BUTTERWORTH: The Immigration Department has busted a syndicate selling fake Immigration and Road Transport Department documents to foreigners for between RM30 and RM100 each.
The syndicate, which has been active for the past three months, also sold fake Myanmar passports and United Nations High Commis-sioner for Refugees (UNHCR) cards.
State Immigration director Abdul Rahman Harun said three members of the syndicate including two foreigners were detained on Wednesday night.
A 33-year-old Myanmar national was detained in a car at Jalan Baru near Bukit Mertajam.
“We search the car and found fake Myanmar passports, pass stickers and work permit stickers as well as several other fake documents,” he told a press conference here yesterday.
In a follow-up operation, he said his men raided a house in Bukit Mertajam and found a computer and paraphernalia which were used to make fake driving licences, immigration stickers and UNHCR cards.
Abdul Rahman said they detained a 48-year-old local and his 43-year-old Chinese national girlfriend in the house.
The man was believed to be the syndicate’s mastermind, who prepared the fake documents and used the Myanmar national as his agent to sell them.
He said that although the Chinese national had a valid passport, she had overstayed for 18 months.
“We also seized RM500 and a bank book belonging to the Myanmar suspect in the house,” he said.
He said the Myanmar national would be charged with not having a valid travel document, possessing fake documents and for abetting, and the Chinese national for overstaying.
The mastermind would be charged with falsifying government documents and for harbouring an illegal foreigner.
