Club gets nod to help refugees

KOTA KINABALU: The Putera 1Malaysia Club has been given permission to deliver humanitarian aid to Rohingya refugees in Myanmar.

Foreign minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman yesterday said he had received a written approval for this from his counterpart in Myanmar, Wunna Maung Lwin.
The delivery of the food, toiletries and medicine, however, would be sent by a normal vessel and not the Malaysian navy as planned earlier, Anifah said.
"I have informed the club president, Datuk Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim, who is now in Myanmar, about the approval.
"The club and Myanmar government will decide when to deliver the aid," Anifah said after launching the Kimanis Umno division meeting in Bongawan.
About 480 tonnes of humanitarian aid collected by the club was supposed to be delivered on board navy ship KD Seri Indera Sakti but was delayed pending approval from the Myanmar government to allow the vessel to dock at its Sittwe Port.
The club has collected more than 560 tonnes of aid in the form of food, toiletries and medicine since Aug 22, hoping to distribute to some 200,000 Rohingya refugees staying at Kutupalons and Mayapara, 120km from Chittagong, Bangladesh, near the Thai-Myanmar border.
